Central 1 Credit Union is committed to the protection of personal information and to the individual’s right to control the use and exchange of his or her personal information.
Central 1 has adopted the Code for the Protection of Personal
Information. Credit unions are member-owned and controlled financial institutions
and, as such, have an inherent responsibility to be open and accessible
while, at the same time, adhering to the highest standards for the protection
of their members’ privacy. Central serves the credit unions and
must be able to satisfy the credit unions that it also demonstrates the
same respect for the protection of their members’ personal privacy.

Privacy Principles
Below is a summary of Central’s 10 Privacy Principles
of the Code for the Protection of Personal Information:
a) Accountability
Central is responsible for personal information under its control and
shall designate a privacy officer who is accountable for Central’s
compliance with the principles of the Code.
b) Identifying Purposes
The purposes for which personal information is collected shall be identified
by Central at or before the time the information is collected.
c) Consent
The knowledge and consent of the individual are required for the collection,
use, or disclosure of personal information, except in specific circumstances.
d) Limiting Collection
The collection of personal information shall be limited to that which
is necessary for the purposes identified by the credit union or Central.
Information shall be collected by fair and lawful means.
e) Limiting Use, Disclosure, and Retention
Personal information shall not be used or disclosed for purposes other
than those for which it was collected, except with the consent of the
individual or as required by law. Personal information shall be retained
only as long as necessary for the fulfillment of those purposes.
f) Accuracy
Personal information shall be as accurate, complete, and up-to-date as
is necessary for the purposes for which it is to be used.
g) Safeguards
Security safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information
shall protect personal information. Central will employ the same standard
of care as it takes to safeguard its own confidential information of a
similar nature.
h) Openness
Central shall make readily available specific, understandable information
about its policies and practices relating to the management of personal
information to its member credit unions, its employees, and individuals
who are members of credit unions whose personal information may be collected
by Central from time to time.
i) Individual Access
Upon request, an individual shall be informed of the collection, use,
and disclosure of his or her personal information by Central, and shall
be given access to that information. An individual is entitled to challenge
the accuracy and completeness of the information and have it amended as
appropriate.
j) Compliance
An individual shall be able to question Central’s privacy officer
regarding compliance with the above principles. Central shall put policies
and procedures in place to respond to an individual’s questions
and concerns.
